Your visitors don’t care about you. Terrible isn’t it, well why should they care. Most of the people visiting your website are likely to be looking for useful information that is free. So if you want them to stay on the site long enough to decide to buy something, you best start by giving them something.
Internet readers are scan readers, it is very easy for a visitor to a website to just close it and move to the next one. Unlike walking into a shop, there is no human interaction keeping them there. It is imperative that you grab their attention from the first instance of them visiting your site.
The main things to consider are, what are they likely to be looking for and how easy is it for them to find it on your site. Well thought out and concise titles help the visitor scan a page and find a relevant article. A short paragraph of text after the title will then give them more information and hopefully encourage them to read on.
You can throw many of the rules of marketing out of the window when it comes to writing content for websites. People are used to sales spill when they read mass marketing leaflets that come through there door. But the web is a relaxed environment where you can talk to your potential customers in a friendly and un-pressured way. There is no commitment by either party to read, or listen to anything they don’t want to. They will just leave.
Writing in a way that speaks directly to the reader will help them engage in what you are trying to say. A bit like I’m doing now… Hello. Given that internet readers are scan readers and would prefer a nice easy read. Writing in a relaxed style of writing offering good information, will ensure a pleasant and easy read for the visitor.
So you’ve got your content
Great, relax. Well no, your content may well be fantastic; it might be worth reading twice. But how many times are people really going to read it. I brought a news paper this morning, who would like to bet I’m going to read it again next week?
There are two major advantages to updating the content of your website. Firstly, what I have touched on above, people will come back to your site, creating a relationship with your potential customers. Also the search engines love fresh new content. Those clever people at Google and alike know that their visitors want relevant search results. So if the search engines can see that your site is being updated (which they can) with lots of relevant content often enough. They are likely to consider your site a worthy resource for their users and push you to the top of the search results.
Last but not least, spelling and grammar. It is so important that there are no spelling mistakes in your site. It looks terribly unprofessional and is one of the silliest ways to loose potential customers I can think of. At Realworks we use a professional proof reading service, we chose Inbox Secretarial. Please don’t loose customers over something so trivial as spelling, if you really want your website to work, have it professionally designed and professionally proof read.
